Throughout the year, the Women's Center hosts and sponsors many different events. On this page you will find photographs taken at various events. If you click on a picture in a particular section, you will be able to flip through the album for that event by clicking on the "next" button which will show up if you hover your mouse near the top right corner of the image. Erin Weed, author of Girls Fight Back! The College Girl’s Guide to Protecting Herself, founded the organization Girls Fight Back in 2001 after the murder of her college sorority sister. In this presentation, Erin shows students how many violent incidents can be predicted and avoided by trusting intuition and by using simple strategies. She believes that it is time for college students to take control of their personal safety by learning how to be a BAD VICTIM.
Coordinated with Norfolk Karate & ODU Police Department, students got the chance to learn about basic self-defense techniques, campus safety resources, and more!
Inspired by a national public awareness project, Silent Witness Virginia seeks to raise awareness of domestic violence and create opportunities for healing through a visual memorial to lives lost. Over 30 women, children, and men are memorialized in this collection. In collaboration with Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance.
Komen On the Go™ is a community education and outreach tour that is part of Susan G. Komen for the Cure's efforts to engage all generations in the fight against breast cancer. After all, every three minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the U.S. This exciting tour has expanded its reach in 2007 to nearly 150 campuses and communities via two colorful cruisers traveling in tandem, connecting more people to the cause.
Stitch-A-Bit, now held weekly, is held on Wednesday nights in the Women's Center. Anyone is welcome to come in and learn to knit or work on other craft projects like crochetting or even needle work!
The Red Flags were planted in Kaufman Mall for all to see! The Red Flag Campaign is the first statewide public awareness campaign to address dating violence and promote the prevention of dating violence on Virginia's college campuses.
“Can I Kiss You?” was a fun program about dating & intimacy on college campuses today. While most people simply “make their move” on a date, Mike shows why “asking first” makes all the difference!
Ever flip through a magazine and see an ad that makes you steam? Well on the Talk Back Wall, students got the opportunity to "talk back" to popular media images of women that are harmful and offensive.
Many people are meeting and exchanging information over the internet through online communities like Myspace and Facebook, yet most people aren't aware of the prevalence of cyber-stalking and other crimes. In this program, students learned how to identify cyber violence and how to be cyber safe.
The Clothesline Project is an event to bring awareness to issues of violence against women. It is an opportunity for women affected directly and indirectly by violence to express themselves by decorating a t-shirt. Students at ODU had the opportunity to decorate a t-shirt in the residence halls and also on Kaufman Mall.
